Founded in 2010, Mountain Roots Food Project is on a mission to cultivate a resilient food system in the Gunnison Valley by enhancing healthy connections between food, earth and community. They foster knowledge, teach skills and provide opportunities that ensure access to affordable, nutritious and sustainably-produced food.

In 2014, Mountain Roots identified five primary focus areas for their work: Food Culture & Education, Food Security, Food Production, Food Economy, and Food Policy. These focus areas are supported by numerous initiatives including the Mountain Roots Healthy Futures Program that places AmeriCorps members in top organizations across rural Colorado to support programs working in nutrition and environmental education, community and school gardens and increasing access to healthy food.
